Ocean Riviera Paradise Review: Beautiful Property, Questionable Trade-Offs & A Lot of Walking

A weekend trip to Mexico is probably one of my favorite ideas ever. There are plenty of great AirBnB options, but if staying at one of the many all-inclusives across Quintana Roo is more your vibe, you've probably come across Ocean Riviera Paradise as an option. Of the resorts we've been to in the area, I’d probably rate the overall experience around a 6/10.

The resort has beautiful areas, decent food options, fun pools, and enough activities to keep people entertained throughout the trip. At the same time, there were a few things that made the experience feel less “Privilege luxury getaway” and more “well… alright then.”

If you’re considering booking here, especially as a Privilege guest, here’s the version that's not shown in the fancified video reviews you've seen that would’ve helped me be better prepared before arriving.

Getting There

Ocean Riviera Paradise is about 30-45 minutes from either Cancun or Tulum airport depending on traffic. The drive into the resort feels much longer than expected because the final stretch is down what seems like a never-ending road tucked away from everything else.

At night, it gets VERY dark and starts feeling a little questionable if you’ve never been there before. We never felt unsafe, it’s just one of those drives where you start wondering if the Google Maps team opted out and aborted the mission midway. Obviously, there was a big sign from the main road, but the road seems so long that you will probably forget why you turned that way at all.

Privilege Check-In: Nice Setup, Strange Resolution

There’s really just a subtle difference between the standard guest check-in process and the Privilege experience.

Privilege guests have a separate area, upgraded amenity access options, and often a top-tier beverage list. You'd think paying extra would 'buy' a smoother experience from the start.

Well, that's not always the case. We saw other guests come in and out while we still waiting for our rooms to be confirmed. Keep in mind, they ask an approximate arrival time to 'be ready' for your arrival, so this was not fun. We booked a top-floor room but were told upon arrival that the unit was prone to leaking due to the recent rain.

The proposed solution was… interesting.

We were offered a different rooftop suite for an additional $600 charge, even though the room issue was on the resort’s side. The alternative lower-level room came with no rate adjustment or meaningful accommodation either. The overall handling of the situation felt pretty underwhelming, considering this was supposed to be part of the upgraded Privilege experience. Still, we pressed on and after about a 45-minute check-in, we were off... to walk a 5k to get to our rooms.

The Resort Is BIG. Like… BIG Big.

One thing people should absolutely know before booking Ocean Riviera Paradise:

~ Prepare to walk. A lot. ~

The distance from the lobby to the rooms can feel endless depending on where your building is located. The family and adults-only sections closest to the lobby are obviously convenient, which makes sense from a layout standpoint, but it also leaves some of the upgraded room categories feeling farther removed than expected.

Even staying in the Privilege section still meant a decent walk to:

  • the beach

  • Privilege beach access

  • restaurants

  • activities

  • pools

The resort does offer shuttle transportation around the property, but it doesn’t run constantly and doesn’t stop everywhere. Most of the time it felt faster to just keep walking instead of waiting.

By day three, forgetting something in the room meant you just didn't need it as badly or were better off just paying extra to buy a new sunscreen at the giftshop to avoid walking back.

Activities & Entertainment

There was always something happening around the resort:

  • pool activities

  • music

  • entertainment

  • themed events

  • nightlife options

The activities themselves were decent. Some of the lower energy may have come more from the crowd than the actual programming.

There were moments where events seemed like they SHOULD have been more fun than they ended up feeling in real time.

That can vary depending on the season, guest mix, and timing of your trip. So maybe bring your own vibe to be safe.

Food Highlights & Buffet Setup

One thing I really liked was the buffet setup.

The buffets included rotating made-to-order à la carte stations, which helped the experience feel fresher than a standard all-inclusive buffet situation.

The downside is that the stations change daily. One day you find something you love and immediately start planning to eat it again tomorrow… only for it to disappear completely 😭

Still, having fresh made-to-order options throughout the stay was a strong point compared to many resorts.

The Restaurant Experience That Changed Things

Up until this point, most of the issues felt manageable or easy to laugh off. UNTIL....(iykyk).

One experience shifted our overall impression pretty quickly.

While dining at one of the indoor restaurants, we saw roaches inside the restaurant itself.

Not near landscaping. Not outdoors. Inside.

When we reported it, the situation was brushed off. Literally brushed off the table... and blamed on the natural environment surrounding the property.

That response didn’t sit well with us, especially considering:

  1. this was an indoor restaurant

  2. we’ve traveled to Mexico multiple times

  3. this has never been something we encountered before at other resorts

More than the actual sighting itself, it was the response that made the situation worse.

Once something like that happens during a stay, it changes how comfortable you feel dining around the property afterward.

Would I Go Back?

Probably not.

The property itself has plenty to offer visually and there’s enough happening around the resort to keep people occupied.

For me, the combination of:

  • the room situation

  • inconsistent service

  • excessive walking

  • transportation limitations around the property

  • and the restaurant experience

…made the overall stay fall short of what we expected from a Privilege booking.

The resort isn’t terrible. It just didn’t fully deliver in the areas that mattered most to us, so it's not driving me to book my next stay.
